Aydin Province

Aydın is a province of southwestern Turkey, located in the Aegean Region . The provincial capital is the city of Aydın which has a population of approx. 150,000 (2000). Much of the countryside is an attractive mix of fig, olive and citrus trees, especially figs. Other towns in the province include the summer seaside resorts of Didim and Kuşadası.

The central and western parts of the province are fertile plains watered by the largest river in the Aegean region the Büyük Menderes River, with the Aydın Mountains to the north and the Menteşe Mountains to the south. The western end of the province is the Aegean coast with Lake Bafa a major feature of the Menderes delta area. The climate is typical of the Aegean region, very hot in summer.

Population

According to 2000 general census (based on the residential locations) the total population of our province is 950.757. 52% of the population (493.114) live in urban areas, 48% (457.643) of the population live in the villages. Population increase speed is 14 %. Rate of literacy is 94 %.

Transportation

Whilst is has the facilities for railway, maritime and airway transportation thanks to its geographical location, the weight in Aydin's commercial load and passenger transportation is borne by highways. In addition to the rural road network, in our province, there are state and provincial roads with a length of 700 km, railway with a length of 135 km, the Kusadais Port with a capacity of 2400 vessels / year, and an airport with a runway length of 1435 m. where small type planes can land and take off..
